Motivation:

Similar to present, events can complete at specific time in future or past.

We will learn about past perfect and future perfect tenses in this session.

Past Perfect Tense:

"When Usha looked out of the window" =  An event in the past.

So the gathering of clouds were already completed before the above event in past.

Above sentence is an example of Past perfect tense.

First Blank:

Solution:

"Tomorrow by this time" 

        • suggests we are talking about a time in future.
        • it suggests that the action of joining will be completed by this time.
        • This is nothing but future perfect tense.
        • Subject + will/shall + have + v3 + object

So answer:

Iniya moves to Chennai to join an IAS coaching class. Tomorrow by this time, she will have joined the class

sometimes instead of will, would is also used.

Another answer:

Iniya moves to Chennai to join an IAS coaching class. Tomorrow by this time, she would have joined the class

 

Second Blank:

She _____________________ (undergo) training till next year.

      • "till next year" suggests that the training will continue till next year
      • This is future continuous tense.
      • Subject + will/shall + be + v1+ing + object

Answer:

She will be undergoing training till next year.

 

 

Third Blank:

She _______________________ (work)very hard by the time she comes home.

      • Similar to first blank, "by the time she comes home" suggest working hard will complete by this time.
      • This is again future perfect tense.
      • Subject + will/shall + have + v3 + object

So answer:

She will have worked very hard by the time she comes home.

Answer 2:

She would have worked very hard by the time she comes home.

 

 

Fourth Blank:

Her parents _____________________ (worry) about her health all the time.

      • " all the time" suggests that the worry will take place at every point in future.
      • This is future simple tense.
      • Subject + will/shall + V1 + object

So answer:

Her parents will worry about her health all the time.

 

 

Fifth Blank:

They ___________________ (write)many letters by the time she comes home.

      • Similar to first blank, "by the time she comes home" suggest writing will complete by this time.
      • This is again future perfect tense.
      • Subject + will/shall + have + v3 + object

So answer:

They will have written many letters by the time she comes home.

Answer 2:

They would have written many letters by the time she comes home.

 

 

After completing all blanks:

Iniya moves to Chennai to join an IAS coaching class. Tomorrow by this time, she would have joined the class. She will be undergoing training till next year. She would have worked very hard by the time she comes home. Her parents will worry about her health all the time. They would have written many letters by the time she comes home. They will be very happy when Iniya becomes an IAS officer.

 

 

Tip: Think before answering.

  • She ran towards the big gap in the wall through which she ___________ (enter).

     

    Complete the sentence with appropriate tense.

    Difficulty Level: Moderate

    "She ran towards the big gap" - Past event.

    Next sentence suggests that She completed before running towards the big gap.

    This suggests the structure of past perfect tense.

     

    She ran towards the big gap in the wall through which she had entered.
